EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - Navigating the bureaucratic process can be a chore for unemployed Rhode Islanders trying to get the benefits they are eligible for. To make it a little easier, Lt. Gov. Elizabeth Roberts announced a new resource on her website for those who may qualify for federal COBRA health insurance.

Roberts outlined the details of the tool during a news conference Thursday morning at Coastal Medical in East Providence.

The federal stimulus plan, also know as the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, provides a 65 percent subsidy for the cost of COBRA coverage for workers.

The premium reduction will last for up to nine months and became effective March 1. Those who previously turned down the coverage may also still be elligible.

Roberts said the resource on her website will help people navigate the complex law to find out if they qualify for the reduced premium, as well as how to start saving money immediately.

There is also a section with frequently asked questions about applying, and links to additional information.

Roberts encouraged anyone with questions about COBRA to call her office at 401-222-2371.
