NEWPORT, R.I. (WPRI) - Senator Pell was a well-respected leader, all around the world. In 2005, he welcomed the Dalai Lama to Salve Regina University.

The two men first met back in 1980, while Senator Pell was chairman of the powerful senate Foreign Relations Committee.

Pell fought to establish humanitarian assistance for people living in Chinese-ruled Tibet, and to make a free Tibet part of American foreign policy.
