CRANSTON, R.I. (WPRI) - Starting Thursday, Cranston residents who do not put out recycle bins will not get their trash picked up.
City residents will have to separate recyclables from their trash, and have at least one recycling bin out to have their garbage collected.
Cranston's city coucil adopted the 'no bin, no pickup' policy last fall, as a way to protect the environment and cut the city's trash collection budget.
Under the policy, recycling bins must be sorted correctly. They must also stay out on the curb, until the trash is also collected.
If residents do not put their recycling bins out, and their trash is not picked up, they will have to remove the trash cans from the curb. If they leave them out, they could face a citation from the city.
East Providence, Cumberland, Lincoln, and Smithfield already have mandatory recycling policies in place. Providence will start requiring recycling on November 2.
