CRANSTON, R.I. (WPRI) - Swimmers in Cranston will have a place to cool off this summer after all.
Mayor Fung's office says the city pool will soon be open to residents. Back in March, city councilors were against opening the pool, citing that it would only add to the city’s $6 million dollar budget deficit.
The pool maintenance has been put into the city budget. But, due to the city's financial distress the pool will be operating with modified hours in order to cut costs.
The mayor's office also says rates will increase for out of town users, as a way to generate more funds.
Mayor Fung says that it is important to the community to have
the pool open this summer. A few local banks have made donations to
help absorb some of the pool costs.
Operating the city pool costs $200,000 dollars a summer.
