PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - Rhode Island Gov. Donald Carcieri returned to Rhode Island Tuesday afternoon following a morning meeting on the nation?s battered economy with President-elect Barack Obama.

The meeting was hosted by the National Governors Association in Philadelphia. Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick also attended the meeting.

NGA members are pushing for a stimulus package that includes at least $40 billion to help pay for health care programs and $136 billion more for road and bridge repairs.

Carcieri is the governor of the smallest state, but he faces big economic trouble .

Rhode Island has one of the worst unemployment rates in the country. Declining tax revenue has caused a massive state budget deficit and could lead to more spending cuts or tax increases.
