BRISTOL, R.I. (WPRI) - A second-grade teacher in Bristol was arrested Monday while on her way to school and charged with driving drunk. Officials say this isn't the first time she has been accused in an alcohol-related incident.
Kathleen Borgia, 43, a teacher at Colt Andrews Elementary School in Bristol, pleaded not guilty to the charges in court Monday afternoon.
The school committee fired Borgia last year for drinking on the job. She had just been reinstated a few weeks ago after a successful appeal of her firing.
Back in 2004, Borgia was charged with simple assault and resisting arrest. She was also ordered to undergo alcohol counseling.
It's unclear what consequences she could face with the school department. Borgia was released on $10,000 bond with surety. She will return to court on October 9th.
