PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The start of a three-day cold snap has many schools shut down across the state today. Daytime temperatures aren't expected to rise out of the teens, and my drop to 1 degree-below zero tonight.

Meteorologist Michelle Muscatello says the bitter cold temperatures will allow for a light fluffy and dry snow. Accumulations will be light. Dusting to 1" in our northern suburbs.

"Expect one to three inches for the Providence metro area, with up to four inches as you get closer the the south coast, Cape and Islands," adds Michelle.

The state Department of Elderly Affairs has asked residents to check on elderly friends and family who are susceptible to the cold during the weekend.
