BARRINGTON, R.I. (WPRI) - The town of Barrington is considering a proposal to allow liquor stores to open. The "dry town" has some people opposing the proposal.
After a recent splurge of high profile, alcohol-related teen deaths, many residents say that bringing liquor stores into the town is a bad idea.
The Barrington Town Council's proposal comes just months after Ryan Greenberg was sentenced to prison for a drunken boating accident that killed another teen.
State lawmakers will vote on the ballot next November.
Barrington Town Manager Peter DeAngelis says, "I look at it this way: We are in the proximity of Bristol, Warren, East Providence. The package stores are hear. Individuals who want to pursue and get alcohol can get it nearby."
Workers at the Alcohol Prevention Group believe that the key is to crackdown on selling alcohol to minors.
