PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP/WPRI) - A recruiter for the Rhode Island Air National Guard who allegedly dealt cocaine and prescription drugs from his government office faces drug dealing charges.
Tech. Sgt. Richard Flamand was held without bail after his arraignment Tuesday for possession of cocaine, marijuana and other drugs. He was arrested Monday by state police and federal agents.
Investigators searched Flamand's recruiting office in Cranston and said they found 40 grams of cocaine and prescription pills. The Guard is investigating his contacts with recruits.
He could face military discipline. Flamand's attorney, Richard Ciccone, did not immediately return a call seeking comment.
In light of Flamand's arrest, the Adjutant General of Rhode Island and Commanding General of the Rhode Island National Guard, Major General Robert T. Bray, has announced a stand-down of Air National Guard recruiting operations.
Major General Bray has ordered a "top-to-bottom" audit of the operational procedures during the 5 -day stand down. Staff will also under-go ethics and legal training.
"The alleged actions of Technical Sergeant Richard Flamand are not in keeping with the core values of the United States Air Force or the RI National Guard and if sustained, are a gross violation of our sacred trust with the people of Rhode Island and the Citizens of the United States.” said Major General Bray.
Lt. Col. Denis Riel says that Flamand has been relieved of his full-time duties without pay.
