CRANSTON, R.I. (WPRI) - The Rhode Island Emergency Management Agency is making preparations ahead of the strong surf expected from Hurricane Bill this weekend.
Bill is projected to pass hundreds of miles to the east, but state officials are warning swimmers and boaters that large waves and dangerous rip currents are likely.
State officials plan to have the maximum number of lifeguards at the beaches this weekend.
RIEMA also said it is coordinating with other state agencies, in case Hurricane Bill tracks closer to New England. It is activating the Emergency Support Function Partnership, which makes it easier for local police, fire, hospitals, the Red Cross and other state agencies to work together.
"We have to plan for the worst, and hope for the best in this situation," said RIEMA director J. David Smith.
The Providence Emergency Management Agency said Thursday it is also taking precautions, including stocking sandbags and checking storm drains. PEMA also said it would keep an eye on flood-prone areas, and the Fox Point Hurricane Barrier.
