Corrections officer caught smoking pot

CRANSTON, RI (WPRI) - An ACI corrections officer is charged with smoking pot on the clock.

State Police charged Gene Davenport 50, of Coventry with marijuana possession. Police say the 21 year corrections department veteran was smoking pot from a homemade foil pipe inside a state truck.

Police say prison officials were tipped off on Monday. They caught Davenport in the middle of the afternoon.

Lt. Steven Lefebvre says, "they observed his eyes to be bloodshot -reddened and the smell of burnt marijuana emanating from the vehicle."

But State Police say the really disturbing thing about the incident is the weapons davenport was armed with while on duty.

"His outside post assignment he's assigned two weapons one is a handgun one is a shotgun and that's part of the detail he was assigned that day." says Lefebrvre.

Davenport will be formally arraigned on March 17th.
