PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The state is asking nearly 100 squatters living in tents in Providence to move next month.
Rhode Island officials say they want the residents of two tent communities to disperse for safety reasons. They're camped near an interstate highway overpass that is due to be torn down as part of a large highway relocation project.
Transportation Department director Michael Lewis tells The Providence Journal that the state is trying to be compassionate but wants to deal with the situation sooner rather than later.
The department and homeless outreach organizations are working to relocate the squatters.
No final date for the relocation has been set, but it's supposed to happen in August.
