PAWTUCKET, R.I. (AP) - Rep. Patrick Kennedy is marking Sept. 11 by celebrating the first national day of service, signed into law on a bill named for his father, the late Massachusetts Sen. Edward Kennedy.
The Rhode Island Democrat said Friday his father was honored the
act was named for him. In a speech at Pawtucket-based toy maker
Hasbro Inc., Kennedy remembered the first responders who risked
their lives eight years ago, and recalled the words of his uncle,
President John F.
Kennedy, who said, "Ask not what your country can do for you.
Ask
what you can do for your country."
Kennedy says the country feels the best about itself when it's
working for a higher purpose. He joined Hasbro workers in
assembling supplies for HIV/AIDS workers in Africa, and toy bags
for homeless children.
