PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - Negotiations are under way to close a loophole allowing prostitution in Rhode Island so long as it's done indoors.
House and Senate lawmakers passed radically different bills this year trying to solve the problem. They are hoping to reach a compromise before meeting again in September.
A bill sponsored by Rep. Joanne Giannini would make engaging in prostitution a misdemeanor offense regardless of whether it's done indoors or outdoors. Prostitutes and their customers would face a maximum six months in prison and a $1,000 fine for a first offense.
Attorney General Patrick Lynch has objected to a Senate version,
which treats initial convictions as criminal violations.
Prosecutors say violations carry about the same punishment as
speeding tickets.
