PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Providence Mayor David Cicilline says the president of the city firefighters union has refused to put his latest contract offer to a vote.
Cicilline met Wednesday with union president Paul Doughty to try to resolve a yearslong contract dispute that threatens to disrupt the U.S. Conference of Mayors meeting in Providence later this week.
Vice President Joe Biden and other members of the Obama administration said last week that they would skip the conference to avoid crossing a firefighter picket line.
Cicilline has urged Doughty to present his latest contract offer to union members for an up-or-down vote. The proposal would require firefighters to contribute to their health care and also includes a retroactive pay hike.
