PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A federal judge in Rhode Island has approved more than a dozen settlements in lawsuits stemming from a 2003 nightclub fire that killed 100 people.
U.S. District Judge Ronald Lagueux signed off on the 13 settlements Thursday with defendants including Anheuser Busch, Clear Channel Broadcasting and the state of Rhode Island.
His approval is required before survivors and victims' relatives can receive the more than $176 million in settlement money offered to resolve the lawsuits. Several other defendants have only recently filed motions seeking to have their settlements approved. Those motions are still pending.
The Feb. 20, 2003 fire at The Station nightclub began when a rock band's pyrotechnics ignited soundproofing foam around the stage.
