PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - House Speaker William Murphy says Rhode Island lawmakers will likely pass a bill banning indoor prostitution when they meet next week.
Murphy outlined his priorities for the special two-day session starting Oct. 28 in a letter released Wednesday. Rhode Island is the only state in the country, along with certain counties in Nevada, that permits paid sex in private.
House and Senate lawmakers couldn't agree on compromise legislation to close the legal loophole before taking an abrupt summer break. Murphy, a Democrat, said his chamber will also consider bills banning texting while driving and strengthening drunk driving laws.
He's scheduled a Dec. 1 public forum focusing on ways to improve
Rhode Island's tanking economy.
