PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A Roman Catholic bishop wants an apology from U.S. Rep. Patrick Kennedy for criticizing church leaders who will oppose universal health care plans unless there are tighter abortion restrictions.
Providence Bishop Thomas Tobin said Friday that Kennedy, a Roman Catholic, continues to be a "disappointment" and doesn't understand the church's position.
During a recent interview with the conservative Web site CNSNEWS.com, the Rhode Island Democrat said the bishops are fanning "flames of dissent and discord." He said he doesn't understand how the bishops could oppose a plan to extending health care to millions of uninsured people.
The U.S. Conference
of Catholic Bishops says it supports universal health care but
opposes publicly financed abortion. A Kennedy spokeswoman didn't
immediately return a call for comment Friday.
