PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - The brother of Providence's mayor reported to prison Tuesday
afternoon to begin serving a sentence for scheming to extort money
from drug dealers.
Attorney John M. Cicilline received an 18-month sentence
after pleading guilty to conspiracy, obstruction of justice and
making false statements. Eyewitness News has confirmed with the
U.S. Bureau of Prisons that he reported to Fort Devens federal
prison in Massachusetts at 1:37 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.
Cicilline's co-defendant, Joseph Bevilacqua, Jr. also reported
to prison in Brooklyn Tuesday at 2:01 p.m. He is serving a 21-month
sentence.
Both Cicilline and Bevilacqua were accused of extorting money
from their clients by claiming they could set up drug deals. The
clients could then inform investigators about the drug deals to win
lighter prison sentences.
Cicilline is the brother of Providence Mayor David Cicilline.
