PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) -- Intense thunderstorms, which brought heavy rain and frequent lightning to Southern New England Monday morning, will begin to move out of the area this afternoon.
According to Eyewitness News Meteorologist Michelle Muscatello, the storms have weakened significantly from earlier Monday morning, though some heavy rain and isolated thunder are still possible. In addition, the storms will continue to weaken as they move toward the Massachusetts coast.
Muscatello said some additional showers and thunderstorms could develop later this afternoon and evening.
At one point, the storms brought heavy rain, dangerous lightning and winds of 30-50 mph.
According to National Grid, more than 12,000 customers were without power earlier in the day, with Barrington and Providence the most heavily affected areas. As of 12:30 p.m., that number was reduced to just over 500.
The storms also created a dangerous situation, with thousands of lightning strikes showing up on the Live Pinpoint Doppler 12 Lightning Tracker.
According to the Eyewitness News Pinpoint Weather Team , these storms have a history of torrential downpours and localized street flooding.
Kent, Newport, Providence, and Washington Counties were put on flood advisory as of 9 a.m.
