PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A former election opponent is calling for the resignation of a Rhode Island state lawmaker facing sexual assault charges.
Damien Baldino says Democratic Rep. John Carnevale poses a distraction and should step down to answer the charges against him.
Baldino, a Republican, lost to Carnevale last year.
A grand jury charged Carnevale with sexual assault Friday.
The charges stem from a July 28 encounter with a woman in Johnston.
Carnevale's lawyer says his client denies the charges.
Calls to Carnevale weren't returned Monday.
The 50-year old retired Providence police officer and was first elected in 2008.
Lawmakers including House Speaker Gordon Fox say they'll wait for Carnevale to have his day in court before weighing in.
Carnevale is the fourth state lawmaker to face criminal charges this year.
