PROVIDENCE, RI (WPRI)- - Boating is one of the best summer pastimes. However, this year boating is becoming more and more dangerous in local waters.

According to harbor officials there has been an increase recently in boating related accidents.

This year officials say it’s not drunken boating that is causing the issues, but rather speeding and safety violations.

Assistant Harbor Master’s patrol stretches of water from Providence to Narragansett making sure that boaters are following all the necessary safety precautions.

This season speeding, along with children under the age of 13 not wearing lifejackets are among the top violations.
