PORTSMOUTH, R.I. (WPRI)- Brave swimmers took to the icy cold waters of the Atlantic Tuesday to participate in several of the area's polar plunges.

In Portsmouth, the icy dip helped kick off the town's 375th anniversary.

Approximately 300 people showed up, about a third were brave enough to take the plunge into the Sakonnet River.
