NEWPORT, R.I. (WPRI)- The nation's oldest synagogue is involved in a lawsuit over the ownership of historic artifacts.

The Touro Synagogue agreed to sell the 18th-century bells to Boston's Museum of Fine Arts.

The $7.4 million sale would have benefited an endowment fund for caring for the synagogue, but the nation's oldest Jewish congregation in New York is suing.

They claim the sale violates their religious practice.

A federal judge is expected to hold a settlement conference Thursday.
