NEWPORT, R.I. (AP/WPRI)- The Newport Jazz Festival gets under way with a night rich with New Orleans jazz, featuring Dr. John and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band.
The festival kicks off three days of music the night of August 3, with a concert at the Newport Casino. Preservation Hall is celebrating its fiftieth anniversary.
Saturday features acts including guitarist Pat Metheny, singer Diane Reeves, guitarist Bill Frisell, and jazz trio The Bad Plus, all playing at Fort Adams State Park.
On Sunday, again at Fort Adams, singer Susan Tedeschi and guitarist Derek Trucks team up with their Tedeschi Trucks Band. There's also the Maria Schneider Orchestra, Jason Moran and the Bandwagon and Gretchen Parlato and Lionel Loueke.
Tickets are still available for all three days of the festival.
