TIVERTON, R.I. (WPRI) -- Southbound lanes on the new Sakonnet River Bridge have opened to traffic, meaning the 18-ton weight limit has been removed.

The Northbound lanes opened last week. Gov. Lincoln Chafee joined members of the Department of Transportation Monday to tour the new bridge.

RIDOT expects construction to be complete sometime next year.

At that point, the old bridge will be demolished.

Over the past few months, residents have been protesting a proposal to implement tolls on the new bridge.
