TIVERTON, R.I. (WPRI) - Police say they have solved a rare case of cattle rustling here in Rhode Island.

41-year-old Ledyard Lewis of North Stonington, Connecticut was arrested Friday and charged with stealing cows from a Tiverton farm.  According to the Newport Daily News, at least 18 cows went missing from High View Farm.

The suspect told police he acted alone and that he took the animals because the owner owed him money for feedstock.

Lewis was arraigned before a justice of the peace on charges of felony larceny over $500 and theft of animals.  He was released on $10,000 personal recognizance.

Because the cows were transported across state lines, Lewis could also face federal charges.

The cows were quarantined on Lewis' Connecticut farm until they could be tested for tuberculosis.
