EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - East Providence is going to start shutting off street lights this month in an effort to save money.

The Department of Public Works has identified more than 1,100 excess lights that are not located near intersections, pedestrian crossings, and schools.

The city spends about $750,000 a year to maintain 5,000 lights.

The goal of this initiative is to save $150,000 over five years.
