TIVERTON, R.I. (WPRI)-- The State Finance Committee is scheduled to discuss a plan to revoke a law that transfers the Sakonnet River Bridge to the Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority Wednesday.
If revoked, the Rhode Island Turnpike Authority would not be able to toll the bridge that connects Tiverton and Portsmouth.
On Monday, the Portsmouth Town Council voted to support legislation that aims to eliminate a toll.
Many in the East Bay are fiercely opposed to the tolls. The state insists its needed to pay for bridge and road maintenance.
