PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - The Sakonnet River Bridge will officially open on Friday.

Governor Lincoln Chafee will join Senator Jack Reed, RIDOT Director Michael Lewis, and other Federal, state, and local officials for the opening.

A ceremony will be held on the deck of the old Sakonnet River Bridge at 10 a.m.

The old bridge connecting Tiverton and Portsmouth was constructed in 1956 and carried an estimated 40,000 vehicles per day.
