NEWPORT, RI (WPRI) - A rare calico lobster is on display at the Save the Bay aquarium in Newport.

The 7 inch lobster is extremely rare, about 1 in 30 million to be exact.

The lobster's shell is marbled black with orange and yellow.

Save the Bay tells Eyewitness News that the lobster is hatched that way and remains that way until cooked.

The color pattern in lobster shells is inherited, the same way humans and other mammals inherit hair color.

Although the calico lobster is rare, others have been caught off the coast of Cape Cod recently.

The aquarium will be open to the public over the weekend for a viewing of the lobster.
