PORTSMOUTH, R.I. (WPRI) -- Portsmouth police have arrested two teens for firing a BB gun in public.
Officers responded to the Portsmouth High School tennis courts Sunday after a 29-year-old Boston woman reported that she was shot by a projectile in the leg while playing tennis.
Jordan Jacobson III, 18, and Bruce Lawson, 18, both of Portsmouth, were arrested after police found them hiding in a nearby wooded area.
Police tell us that during the arrest, Lawson was wearing a black knit cap, a black shirt, black jeans, black gloves, and wearing a black tactical vest containing two BB pistols. He also had a BB rifle with a scope and tripod in his possession, which police say was used in the assault.
Jacobson had a pellet pistol inside of a backpack in his possession. A camouflage hunting blind used to shield the suspects from their victim was also found on the scene.
The ensuing investigation revealed that on Saturday the two men devised a plan to shoot at random people, and went into the wooded area to set up the area for attack.
Lawson has been charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, conspiracy to commit felony assault, and possession of a firearm on school grounds. Jacobson has been charged with conspiracy to commit felony assault and possession of a firearm on school grounds.
Bail was set at $10,000 with surety for Lawson, and $5,000 with surety for Jacobson.
Both teens were arraigned in court Monday, and both were ordered to undergo a mental health evaluation. The cases have been referred to the RI Attorney General's Office for screening.
