PORTSMOUTH, R.I. (WPRI) - Drivers heading north or south will be able to use the new Sakonnet River Bridge, beginning Friday.

Last week, the Rhode Island Department of Transportation opened the northbound lanes of the new bridge, and Friday, the southbound lanes will open.

The new overpass eliminates the need for the 18 ton weight limit that has been in place for years.

The DOT will next temporarily close the ramp from Route 138 to Route 24 south for about two months to build a temporary ramp.
