PORTSMOUTH, R.I. (AP) -- The Portsmouth School Department has taken the first steps to improving school security following the fatal shootings of 20 children and six educators in Connecticut.

The Newport Daily News reports ( http://bit.ly/FdIyx ) that school officials have approved spending up to $8,000 to make ID badges for school employees and upgrade an intercom system.

Superintendent Lynn S. Krizic said the two changes are basic improvements to increase security in the schools.

She says the department also is forming a safety committee that will review the district's emergency procedures and recommend improvements.
