NEWPORT, R.I. (WPRI) – A crash into a stone wall has claimed the life of a Salve Regina professor

Newport Police told Eyewitness News that officers and rescue personnel were dispatched to the area of 680 Bellevue Avenue near Rough Point at approximately 7:59 a.m.

Once on scene, crews found a vehicle on fire.

Dr. Peter Liotta, 55, was the lone occupant of the vehicle and was found pinned inside and unresponsive.

Liotta was transported to Newport Hospital, where police said he was pronounced dead.

"The Salve Regina University community is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Dr. Peter Liotta," said Jane Gerety, R.S.M., president. "He was beloved by his students, respected among colleagues and renowned internationally for his prolific writing and expertise on world issues."

No one else was hurt in the crash.

The accident remains under investigation by Newport Police.

Meanwhile, the university said they are working to make sure students enrolled in Liotta's classes are able to fulfill their academic requirements.
