NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) - The chairman of the Newport School Committee is proposing that elementary and middle school students wear school uniforms starting in September.
The Newport Daily News reports that Patrick Kelley proposed Tuesday night that the school committee develop a uniform policy.
He says the dress-code would allow for some choices, such as in color of pants or shirts.
Kelley says the policy, if approved, would not apply to students at Rogers High School.
The policy would need to be approved by the School Committee.
Parents would have to be notified by the spring.
Superintendent John Ambrogi says the policy could be considered, but may need to be revised depending on how the state rules on a school-uniform requirement imposed in Woonsocket.
A group of Woonsocket parents have opposed that city's requirement.
