NEWPORT, R.I. (WPRI) - Work to recover all the pieces of a sunken barge underneath the Newport Pell Bridge is complete.

The US Coast Guard reports that the final pieces of the barge were salvaged on Friday.

The barge, which was being used to support efforts to paint the bridge, sank on October 30th in a storm.  As it sank, it flipped over, and ended up underneath about 100 feet of water.

A salvage company from New Jersey was brought in to raise the barge and remove almost 3,000 gallons of diesel fuel.  The barge itself was raised in early December, but several large pieces of equipment had broken free and also needed to be recovered.

The barge is now at Senesco Marine in North Kingstown, awaiting a trip to New Bedford where it will be repaired or scrapped.
