NEWPORT, R.I. (WPRI) - A Newport kindergarten teacher is one of just 55 nationwide presented with the 2010 Milken Educator Awards.
The award recognizes exemplary K-12 teachers, principals, and specialists for their early- or mid-career achievements.
Dale Blaess, a full-time kindergarten teacher at William J. Underwood School, was presented the award Thursday during a surprise ceremony.
The honor includes a $25,000 prize which Blaess can use however she chooses.
"I thought it was someone else. I was expecting someone else to be called," said a surprised Blaess following the ceremony.
Blaess was nominated for helping develop a kindergarten pacing guide for the school district.
Since 1990, 69 Rhode Island teachers have received Milken Educator Awards.
