NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) -- The mayor of Newport is stepping down from his elected position so he can take a job as chief clerk in the district court.
Stephen Waluk announced this week he will resign as mayor and leave the city council because of his new job at the Rhode Island Judiciary, which prohibits certain employees from holding elected office.
The Newport Daily News reports Waluk starts his new job July 30 and plans to resign on Wednesday.
At that time, the council will elect a new mayor from among the remaining members. Councilman Harry Winthrop says he expects to have the support of colleagues to become the new mayor.
A former councilman, Stephen Coyne, will join the council because he was the next-highest vote getter in the most recent election.
