NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) — Visitors to Newport's famous Cliff Walk will finally have a convenient place to use the restroom.
The Newport Daily News reports that the Department of Environmental Management has set aside a $175,000 state grant to pay for permanent restrooms at Forty Steps, at the end of Narragansett Avenue.
Portable toilets are available in the same spot during the summer, but city officials say they have sometimes been tipped over or even thrown over the edge of the cliff.
About 800,000 people visit the 3.5-mile Cliff Walk every year. Senate President M. Teresa Paiva Weed says the toilets will help make visitors comfortable and improve the quality of life in the area.
The grant will allow the city to install a concrete double restroom with flush toilets.
