NEWPORT, R.I. (WPRI) - The Newport City Council has unanimously backed a resolution supporting a statewide referendum to expand casino gaming at Newport Grand.
The Council met this evening and representatives from Newport Grand, the state's other gaming venue besides Twin River, made their case.
A study released by the Governor's office last week seemed to confirm the fears of the owners of Twin River and Newport Grand - that the construction of additional casinos in Massachusetts would hurt Rhode Island's venues significantly.
It's now up to the General Assembly to put expanded gaming at Twin River and Newport Grand on the ballot in November for a statewide referendum.
