JAMESTOWN, R.I. (AP) -- Contractors working on the Pell Bridge between Newport and Jamestown will be opening new toll lanes that will allow motorists with E-ZPass transponders to breeze through at up to 40 mph.
The new lanes at the redesigned toll plaza in Jamestown are set to open late Thursday night or early Friday morning. Drivers with transponders can use the new left lanes to pass through without stopping.
State officials are warning people without transponders that if they are caught using the open tolling lanes they will be mailed a $10 fine. Traffic cameras have been installed at the toll plaza.
The fees will be 83 cents a trip for cars with Rhode Island transponders and $4 for vehicles with out-of-state transponders.
