MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (WPRI) - One man was taken into custody Monday night after a brief standoff led police to evacuate a Middletown neighborhood.

Police were called to a Ludlow Road home earlier in the evening.   Neighboring homes were evacuated because of a strong smell of gas in the area.

The man inside the home surrendered to police just before 11 p.m. and was taken to the hospital to be evaluated.

No one was injured in the incident.

Neighbors like Michael Gonsalves were shocked by the whole thing.

"It's just weird to me," Gonsalves said, "I've never seen anything like this before. It's kind of scary, hopefully nothing bad happens."

It's not clear if the man taken into custody is facing any criminal charges.
