MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (WPRI) -- A Middletown man is under arrest after police say he hit a bicyclist while driving drunk.

Middletown police arrested 32 year-old Jacob Volez Friday night on West Main Road near the Applebee's.  Volez was allegedly driving drunk when he hit a 36 year-old man who was riding a bike.

The victim suffered serious injuries in the crash and was hospitalized.

Police say Volez smelled strongly of alcohol, had difficulty standing and ultimately failed a field sobriety test.  According to a police report, after he was taken back to police headquarters he registered a blood alcohol content of .251 and .252 on two chemical tests.

Volez was charged with DUI, injury resulting.

There was no word Saturday afternoon on the victim's condition.
