NEWPORT, R.I. (WPRI) - A man who has admitted to driving drunk was sentenced in court Thursday.
Nearly 30 years ago, Michael Faria was convicted of reckless driving, in a crash that left 9-year-old Meredith Coffey of Middletown with a permanent traumatic brain injury. She's now forced to use a wheelchair.
This summer, Faria was charged with driving drunk in Portsmouth, smashing into a parked car on Dexter Street.
Faria pleaded no contest to the DUI charge.
He also apologized to Meredith and her family for the 1983 crash, where he'd pleaded guilty to a lesser charge.
Faria was sentenced to a 14 month license suspension, $500 fine, 60 hours community service and 30 days home confinement on the new charge.
