NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) - Dignitaries including former President Bill Clinton are arriving
in Newport to mourn former Rhode Island
Sen.
Claiborne Pell.
Pell represented Rhode Island for 36 years and created the
federal education grants that helped millions of Americans afford
college. He died Thursday at his Newport home after a long struggle
with Parkinson's disease. Pell was 90.
The line of mourners waiting to attend this morning's funeral service at Trinity Episcopal Church stretched around the block. A charter bus brought a Congressional delegation including Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to the parish. Liechtenstein's Prince Hans-Adam II is also on hand for the funeral liturgy.
Clinton, Vice President-elect Joe Biden and Massachusetts Sen. Edward Kennedy plan to deliver eulogies.
Burial will be private.
