NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) - Former President Bill Clinton praises Rhode Island's late Sen. Claiborne Pell as a man born to aristocracy who spent his career helping the less fortunate.
Pell represented Rhode Island for 36 years and created the federal education grants that helped millions of Americans afford college. He died Thursday at his Newport home at 90 after a long battle with Parkinson's disease.
During a funeral service this morning in Trinity Episcopal Church in Newport, Clinton recalled getting a tour of Pell's home after being elected president.
Clinton says there was something "almost magical" about the aristocratic multimillionaire who helped the working class.
Massachusetts Sen. Edward Kennedy also praised Pell as a fighter with a long list of legislative achievements.
