NEWPORT, R.I. (WPRI) - Following a former president and three U.S. Senators, Nicholas Lorillard Pell took the podium at Trinity Episcopal Church to remember his grandfather, the late U.S. Sen. Claiborne Pell.
Using humor, Pell told funeral attendees about his grandfather's quirks; how he would jog in a "reluctantly retired" suit, or about how, despite being very wealthy, his grandfather took pride in being frugal.
"He ran at a slow, steady pace but he always finished," Pell said.
Pell said he grandfather was a consistent, humble man who never relented.
"He would say life is not a bowl of cherries and encourage you to adapt and live to fight another day," said Pell. "How he came through when you needed him most. Always there. Always dependable. And always true to his moral compass. That was my grandfather."
Pell also called the late Senator, who died at the age of 90 New Year's day after a long battle with Parkinson's disease, "a successful advocate for the underpriviledged."
Sen. Pell served 36 years in the U.S. Senate. He is best know for his support of education and the arts.
