NEWPORT, R.I. (WPRI) - A visionary. The ideal of what a public servant should be. That is how Sen. Jack Reed described Claiborne Pell, while eulogizing him during funeral services in Newport Monday morning.
Reed took over Pell's seat in the Senate after his retirement in 1997, and considered the late Senator a friend and a mentor.
"Claiborne Pell dedicated his life as selfless service to Rhode Island and to the nation," Reed said. "As it had been so often in his life, his contribution will appear to be the work of others. Now, I have one remaining priviledge. Simply to say, on behalf of the people of Rhode Island, thank you Senator Pell."
Pell died at the age of 90 New Year's day in his Newport home.
While addressing the bi-partisan delegation of U.S. Senators in attendance, Reed said, "Your presence here speaks volumes about the respect and esteem that Claiborne Pell earned."
