NEWPORT, R.I. (WPRI) - While delivering a eulogy at the funeral for former U.S. Senator Claiborne Pell, Vice President-elect Joseph Biden remembered the man he considered a colleague and friend.
Biden said Pell was one of the elder statesmen he looked up to while beginning his career in the U.S. Senate.
He said Pell, who is best remembered for creating the grant program that helped millions of Americans attend college, understood that the only thing that separates rich from poor is opportunity.
Biden also reminisced about Pell's quirks that made him a truly unique person.
Pell, 90, passed away New Year's day in his Newport home after a long battle with Parkinson's disease.
